Television Under the Swastika (DOCU)

To enable the regular public to see the the Broadcasts on the later more reliable Television system, a number of 'Fernseher' rooms were set up to allow large audiences to see broadcasts in public rooms.

Estigmas (DVD)

The film isn’t, however, remotely convincing as a depiction of post-war Germany, even leaving aside the inescapable facts that everyone looks Spanish and is speaking Spanish. If you’re expecting something like Downfall, forget it. Imagine if you will a post-apocalyptic cross between Hellraiser and an early David Cronenberg body-horror film set in the underground military bunker of Day Of The Dead, and you’ll have a fair idea of what this film is like. It’s fairly diverting, but no forgotten classic.

Etenaz (Protest) (FILM)

Despite striking bold ground, the film is not a success. While it's dramatic content and strong emotions are far away from the popular, film-festival favourites like The Apple, the sheer radical shift is not enough to sustain an awkwardly composed film. The density of characters some overly dwelled upon and others cast aside without a care makes it difficult to identify with anyone. At times it's like watching a 180 minute soap opera condensed into 100 minutes, especially when married with Majid Entezami's melodramatic music.

Droga Na Zachód (Road To The West) (FILM)

Clearly this is a territory of the mind and like many other Polish movies of the period is rich in allegory and its subtle symbolism is brought elegantly to life by veteran director Bohdan Poreba, known for his historical epics of Polands past. Characters mysteriously disappear but Walczak, the old engineer, drives ever onward like the pace of time itself. Although oblique parallels could be drawn with Hemingway, Runaway Train, and most intriguingly Wages of Fear (later remade as Sorceror by William “Exorcist” Friedkin), but this would be to diminish this unique film.

Laibach - Volk Dead In Trbovlje (DVD)

The DVD release Volk Dead In Trbovlje presents Laibach’s performance of the songs from Volk in their hometown of Trbovlje, Slovenia, on March 23rd 2007 during their extensive world tour. The audience is seated and politely applauding, and the whole set-up seems less chaotic than a normal gig, so I surmise that this was one of those ‘recorded before an invited audience’ scenarios. Whilst the performance lacks the spontaneity and excitement of a typical live rock experience, Volk Dead In Trbovlje does an excellent job of presenting the technical sophistication of Laibach’s live presentation. All the song on Volk are performed in order, with the sole exception of ‘Vaticanae’, with video screens behind the band projecting texts and images to complement the songs.

Tyr 3 (BOOK)

The author even gets slightly misanthropic with sentences such as “with the birth of each new child, the value of every other human being is slightly diminished”. Of course, such point is disputable. But, we have to admit the problem of numbers has always been either disregarded as irrelevant, immoral, or just ignored.

Strange Culture (DOCU)

The traumatic events of 9/11 resonate for all the wrong reasons in Hershmans moving, though disturbing tale, amateurish attempts by one of the agencies to prompt something seditious or drug-related out of Kurtz to a total stranger who just ‘happened to be passing’ would be laughable if they were not so worrying. If the American government cannot even find an American citizen innocent in face of all available information, then those in Guantanamo and elsewhere have no-hope at all.

Elemental Shift DVD

In Elemental Shift, released by Table of Contents, Chris Cichocki has created a unique piece of video art. Boldly prefaced with a warning intimating a danger for epileptics, what actually unfolds is a dizzying journey through a an incredibly dense sequence of video-compositions, where sound and vision are locked together in an intense data-blast.

Larsen & Friends - ABECEDA

With the various guest performers on the album, it would seem that Larsen's sound has very much remained the same with perhaps a thicker element on the background thanks to none other than Julia Kent.

SPK - Despair

The main section of Despair lasts around 60 minutes in total, and it is divided into three parts. The first of these is entitled ‘SPK For Mental Health’, and it consists of videos for three SPK songs, made in 1979. The songs are ‘Contakt’, ‘Germanik’ and ‘Slogun’, and their video treatments are very much of their time, with crude, saturated colours, solarisation and moire pattern screen interference laid over grainy black and white performance footage. Ther first couple of songs feature lots of discordant, angsty guitar work combined with relentless industrial rhythms, but ‘Slogun’ stands out as the best song, with shredding sheets of white noise which sound harsh even by today’s standards.
