We think that in general the world is anti-Russian, sometimes for objective reasons, but sometimes because of stereotypes. The cold war of the 60s and 70s deeply influenced the minds of western people. The propaganda worked very well and the image of the Soviet people, the role of the Red Army in the victory of WWII, and the common lifestyle of Russians were rather distorted in the eyes of the western world.
I am not a part of Paganist revival groups or anything, and I feel that there is an urge, a true need for primitivist representation of ideas, religious and other, not by imitating archaic methods but creating new myths. Nothing wrong with religious traditionalism, but I think we're past that. That's my true calling with Tuhat Kuolemaa Sekunnissa: to create a new tradition.
In a way I did. In other aspects I didn't. My original idea was to introduce the Israeli scene to the outside world and to support the scene by promoting events and releasing local artists. I think these two were achieved in many ways. However my personal vision of how Topheth Prophet should act and how experimental music should be produced and promoted have changed many times and are still changing.
Though we both learned in music school for a few years in our childhood we are not professionals, but self-taught musicians. It is always an interesting and inspiring experience to learn to play on a new instrument.
The work was also heavily influenced by my study of the Gnostic gospels which I had read thoroughly during my university years and studied even more in the past two years. All in all it is an apocalyptic tale of the struggle...
I always approach my music from a visual perspective. Being a painter myself, this is inevitable I suppose. It's interesting that you perceive paintings by Kandinsky and Klee in my music. There is a playfulness in the paintings of both of these artists, where shapes almost seem to take on the form of musical notes.
Sometimes the line between myself and the Red King is razor thin. Folks often wonder how much of the performances are "real". I like to leave it a bit ambiguous. Leaving some of the mystery keeps one engaged in something. However, I'm not one of those musician types who is limited to a single identity. I have many other interests that I pursue with equal dedication.
