Concert Reports
Novalis Deux / Spiritual Front, 19-12-2006, Goudvishal, Anrhem, Netherlands

Then the headliner, Spiritual Front. Wow, what a performance they gave. Simone was really the hero of the night, tweaking some songs ('Jesus dies in Holland'), interacting with the audience and in the heat of the last song (deliberately) falling off his chair. While the crowd wasn't really there for Novalis Deux (pity, cause they rocked), the floor was filled when Spiritual Front played. Almost as if a lot of people only showed of for them. After the last song, they played two more songs, new ones. Was lovely to hear new work. Spiritual Front's performance was simply said one of the best I witnessed. Danceable and full of emotions and atmosphere.

Nurse with Wound - Great American Music Hall - San Francisco, CA

As far as the “noise” itself, this performance was more on the abrasive side, commencing with low rumbles spliced in with treated percussives and manipulated vocal work that faded in and out of the range of audibility, sometimes flashing up to the surface of the wall of sound slowly taking shape. I could feel the lower frequency drones amble about the room in a swirling sort of collage that felt at times as if it was passing through the audience. The sound system at the venue definitely worked in the band’s favor for what they were collectively going for; it gave their “noise” a pronounced physicality that drown out the senses.

100 Suns / Face Down in Shit - Elbo Room / Lucifer’s Hammer, Mission District, San Francisco

This show was different, as I could hear what each guitar was up to, as well as a distinct bass tone. This made their “wall of sound” moments stand out more. The overall style of 100 Suns could only be defined as a hybrid of current Death and Black Metal with a hint of Doom. I hear elements of early Napalm Death, Brutal Truth, Nasum and possibly even Darkthrone in there. But the band definitely possesses its own sound unique to itself, and never grinds into the realms of incomprehensibility. Even at their speediest live moments you can still bang you head. If you want to hear metal that both grinds and pummels, then 100 Suns won’t disappoint.

Grayceon - The SF Eagle, SOMA District, San Francisco

Grayceon is an ambitious band, and that’s what I like most about them. Not many bands take risks, and when they do they’re usually not the right kind; Grayceon take artistic risks that I’m sure will pay off in the long run. They’re also a fairly new band with only a couple songs, but songs long enough to fill a set. Song structure/length is another point of challenge/risk for a listener, but a challenge I am partial to.

Combichrist - Live @ the DNA Lounge - July 19th, 2005

At midnight, two band members came down to greet the crowd. Yes, it was finally time to see Combichrist. The lead singer came down the steps and the crowd again rushed the stage. They started with “This shit will f*ck you up” and the crowd went wild. Dancing madly like beasts before their final end. I was amazed, and very impressed with their show appearance, and how well they performed. With high energy and great madness, letting the crowd flow with dance and joy.

Death in June and Squarewave concert review for show at The Elysium night club in Austin, Texas, April 8 th 2005

Douglas mentioned to me that he understood the people threatening this venue were in league with the ‘activists' responsible for the Chicago debacle, in which a Jewish venue owner was lambasted with being pro-Nazi and pressured to the point of canceling the scheduled concert.

Death In June - Waldteufel - Dorien LIVE April 5th 2005 at Sabala's in Portland, OR USA

Having missed Death In June's previous visit, I was excited to hear them live for the first time, and cautious not to be over anxious, as I kept hearing that this would likely be a very subdued set with very little instrumentation. The rumors were true, but the effect was not something to be let down by.
