15 Degrees Below Zero - Between Checks And Artillery, Between Work And Image

The ticking clock rhythmically meters mildly sinistral beats before shrivelled noise, flotsam from a place without time, pressing as distorted vocal residue intrudes. Muffled bells chime and plump beats, stuffed in a cellar, ooze underneath as volume spreads poring twisted unintelligible poetry that squeals in feedback down gnarled stairs.

1997EV - Dead.Ends.Sinful

A repeating guitar line accompanied by noises, atmospheres and sounds are broken by voice and words. The composition recalls a certain ritual feeling to it, in the most visceral description of the word. A chorus created by phrases that are underlined and presented by one beat of percussion. It is as if the tranquility of sound is recalled by the voice to create an 'in crescendo', to change its preconceived rhythm, grow, metamorphose into something darker and wilder.

1gog - Всем Святым (To All Saints)

A cryptic and ethereal journey through the astral planes via the unlikely avenue of a droned out vision of Russian Orthodox Christian chanting. A monastic vocal loop plays on repeat for roughly six minutes as a chaotic swell of electronic sounds whips itself into a frenzy.

20.SV - Acid Vomit Human Genocide

“Avid Vomit Human Genocide” fully succeeds in creating an atmosphere of final nuclear confrontation. Cold and remote, the tonalities 20.SV create sound like a berserk computer programmed to eliminate the human race with obscene thoroughness and utter disregard for anything remotely humane.

20.SV - Apocalyptic Desert

20. SV begins this apocalyptic torture with a distorted but low grunt, like a beast waking up. From that point onwards there will be more and more pressure with each passing moment, as layer upon layer of over distorted waves of sound. The game on this album is simple. You wanted a desert of death you got it.

20.SV - Insects

Insects is a 32 minute long single track release. No messing around here, the intro throws us into a sea of writhing frequencies which fill the air around us with a sense of unease as it increases in pitch and intensity. As the track progresses new frequencies are unleashed, and add to the wall of noise, the increased intensity demanding our attention.

2673 / Unicorn - Split

Unicorn is a different beast altogether. Swinging between grungy noise and feedback, and on to quiet introspective ambient minimalism, almost musique concrète in aesthetics, and experimentalism, this is a good example of an approach that’s guaranteed to keep you guessing. My impression is that unicorn, or rather Nelson, is fascinated with the sculptural possibilities of sound, as well as by its narrative qualities. The five pieces showcased here, as disparate as they are, possess a discernible depth and dimensionality to them

6Comm & Freya Aswynn - The Fruits of Yggdrasil

She has also released three albums under her own name, The Fruits Of Yggdrasil, 1995’s Shades Of Yggdrasil and 1998’s Songs Of Yggdrasil, which was released to accompany the Northern Mysteries and Magick book.

7 SE7EN 7 - Eye of God

7 SE7EN 7 seems to be none other than Darrin M. Sullivan, Ambimorpheus Recordings supremo and more familiar to me as part of Lithopaedion, whose self-titled album I reviewed some time ago in these very virtual pages. The contrast between the sleazy, nasty, brutish & harsh character of the latter and this platter is markedly pronounced – here Sullivan displays a very different, quieter, and more contemplative aesthetic, but still imbued with strong undertones of darkness and coldness. This album carries with it a musical DNA whose origins and ancestry lie within the space-rock/cosmic-rock that emerged out of Germany in the 70s in the form of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, and others, albeit with the addition of that shiveringly sinister flavouring.

80th Disorder - Transform EP

80th Disorder seems to be a unique blend between bands like The Cure, Love Spirals Downwards, and even older punk bands like The Clash at times.  I also distinctly hear a lot of influence from the likes of Echo and the Bunnymen, and perhaps some Nick Cave.  The music itself is catchy and beautiful, flowing from track to track in a constant groove but with each track different in pace and style from one another.  The band's sound is contant, yet it remains ever evolving through this short release.
