Y.ann - Valytheme

‘Lay’ kicks off with a slowly undulating golden river of drone, liquid harmonics blossoming under the canopy of a hazy, warm, nebulous, otherworldly texture.  Where drone music can often wander on dark paths the feeling imparted here is one of warmth and light, beauty and enchantment.  This is an organic, amorphous soundtrack to a lazy summers day, of clouds being born in the sticky, still air under an azure sky before evaporating into the aether.  Ghostly percussive rattles shepherd the twisting soundscapes into new pastures where wraith like frequencies roam freely.  This is mesmerising and totally hypnotic.  Where Troum can often sound cloying, claustrophobic and dark this feels as refreshing, light and cooling as a cleansing, fine rain even though the music has been forged in similar musical territory.  This is the sound of the true calm before the storm.

Yagihashi + Sato + Higo - The Temple of No Power No Virtue

Having spun this recording a good few times I can wholly recommend it to the ‘experimental’ music fans who are reading this. There’s so much going on here throughout the four tracks that you tend to forget that it is, for all intents and purposes, a jazz recording. The sax playing of Yagihashi leads throughout the recording but also works in tandem with Sato and Higo to create a rich and varied textured sound. There’s an element of semi-drone induced pieces sitting in the background along with the electronic effects as the music winds its way through its maze like passages.

Yama-Akago - Wheel of Fortune

It’s the rubbing of the bells that will halt that presence. The chiming tap and stroking of hammer on reverberating steel is a sinister, if dulcet thing, which finds accompaniment in odd feminine ululations suspended in spider webs.

Yan Jun - 20 For Lona

Yan Jun chose 20 pirate DVDs from his collection, sampled, modulated and edited parts of the audio, and ran them simultaneously. The result is an interesting tapestry of recognisable (and unrecognisable) snippets of dialogue and original film scores interlaced with buzzing static, low-end rumbles, and generally calming drones. The title of the installation was ‘I Bought 3000 DVDs,’ and could certainly stand as a statement on the boundaries of what can be considered ‘fair use’ at a time when the mainstream media giants are struggling to adapt and survive in a quickly changing digital rights climate.

YAO 91404 D - Key to Abyss

YAO 91404 D seeks to sandwich board all of Russia's defining moments in its collective experiments, themes and sounds range from everything from Yuri Gagarin's Lunar missions to the Communist age, and the workers being crushed under machine and steel. Typical Industrial, but from a Nation that just knows how to flex its musical muscles appropriately.

Yasushi Miura - Kernel: Magnitude No. 8

At the same time, some tracks seem completely pointless, like Don't Hurry me, which seems to be a mockery of itself.  Its simply a note played over and over again, about 5 notes per second, swelling at first, staying the same pitch, sticking for two straight minutes, then abruptly ending.

Yasushi Miura - Magnitude No.7 Meek

The whole album is a fine example of a skilled artist that just wants to prove to the world what he is capable of.

Year Of No Light - Nord

somehow growing, always somehow becoming a bigger monstrosity than the album can seem to contain. There are so many atmosphereic layers to hear and listen to within the music that keeping a steady attention span on any one of them can quickly suck you into the void. The french always seem to have a way of taking music of any form and making it better. They've done it with classical, black metal, death metal, trip hop, anything you can really imagine, so it makes sense that a french band would now pick up sludge doom and turn it into something so unique but somehow familiar.

Yermo - Yermo

The beginning minutes of the first track can be summed up in one word: claustrophobic. Imagine yourself being trapped in the haul of a sinking ship. You're panicing. You know that time is short, and that you have only minutes to escape before you either run out of air, or the haul collapses and the water comes crashing in all around you. You have 10...maybe 12 minutes to live. First you try all the doors. Hopeless
