The 6 tracks presented herein are essentially soundscapes or sound sculptures, you choose the most appropriate word, that is a marriage of musical genres. ( ) manages to touch on aspects taken from Industrial through to Power electronics and onto black Ambient in a way that is quite marvellous to listen to. This electrifying mix of styles, coupled with the artistic vision of the artist, has produced a recording that is an understated masterpiece of using modern technology to encapsulate an aural beauty steeped in darkness and decay.

Its initial stuttering start yields to much more prolonged and sustained passages, utilising voice, instrumentation and percussion, complemented with bursts of treated noise until finally the drone cuts through all to provide a canvas on which random glitchiness is painted. There is a strangely sacred feel to this, and this is entirely appropriate given that MacLise himself was of a mystical bent, as towards the end of his life he began bringing together eastern streams of mysticism (especially since his travels had finally brought him to the magical kingdom of Nepal) and transcendent music. This clever alternating of chaotic and ordered elements seems very much to sum up the course of MacLise’s life, at least what I have read of it.

Glitch / Noise / Ambient / Minimalist / Drone

There’s a little of all the good things here in (r); an album that strikes its originality with ties to the past and the artist’s other projects. Gloomed guitar rock in an expansive sound box, where crafted melodies lull and compel listlessness, floatation and drift. It is not rock and roll though. The layered instrumentation is symphonic without walls of guitar, poignant without the pianoforte of percussion, warm and filling without the bloat of round-wound bass strings.

Avantgarde / Indie / Folk

They're not quite deep enough to be goth, not harsh enough to be listed with the likes of Psyclon 9 and certainly nowhere near the clean ranges of VNV Nation. They almost sound as if some old thrash metaller decided to put down his guitar and whiskey and pick up a drum machine and absinthe. The vocals are the worst part about the album and they could certainly be better in either direction, annoying for the most part. The music isn't slow enough to be droning but not upbeat enough to make one want to dance to it. It reminds me of early attempts at EBM with more melodic sounding industrial projects such as Leaether Strip.

EBM / Synthpop

Here we can find for a short time the same contrast between a main rhythmic noisy line and some ambient background pattern. But actually, these rather intervene to phrase the track than as a complement. The atmosphere is really dark as well as The rhythmic noisy part consists of a main beat, really low and quite powerful, some distorted and copiously parasite noises.

Ambient / Rhythm 'n' Noise

The minimalist cover art for this CD shows verdant foliage reflected in a river or stream. It’s a dreamy, almost psychedelic image which hints both at gleaming beauty and subtle darkness. As such, it is the perfect companion for the music contained within.

This is deadly serious and efficiently addictive European thrash-dance ambient brutality.

Industrial / Dance

At least there is a concept behind the whole thing, they are trying to draw attention to a lamentable social phenomenon, to the decline of western civilization, to a ruthless consumerist life style that regurgitates problems and spits back unusable solutions, conform or perish. Very well with all this, too bad both of the tracks consist of nothing more but unalterable, relatively high levels of noise and the necessary electronic screeching in the background. It goes on and on like this, on track 1 as well as track 2, and after several minutes have passed one cannot help but begin to wonder why it keeps going on at all. No difference, no variation, no mercy really.
