Arkane Interview

Heathen Harvest:  Hello ArkanumX. Your project is immersed in mystery and mysticism. Can you enlighten our readers a bit on your project and yourself? How did you start out in music?

Arkanum X:  Hello Heathen Harvest.  ArkanumX started out as a co-founder of Ancient folk project Daemonia Nymphe and released two albums with them, Bacchic Dance Of The Nymphs and Tyrvasia  back in 1996.  After his Departure from Daemonia Nymphe in 1999, ArkanumX (as IkonX back then) formed xARKANEx in the year 2000 and released the debut album Arcane Elitism in 2002 through the American ethereal Label The Fossil Dungeon.  In the year 2005 ArkanumX makes a new beginning changing the name from xARKANEx to Arkane and after three years of recording in the process, the Debut Arkane Album gets to see the light of day , entitled Enraptured Serene Mesmerism (released in 21 January 2008 on Seduction Productions.

HH:
So under the name of "XarkaneX" you released "Arcane Elitism" in 2002. Since then, the project has lost the X's on either side. In other interviews you said that the X stood for the hidden, obscure, unknown, the arcane. Can we see the loosing of the X's as the project maturing and putting itself more into the spotlight?

AX:  Arkane is the new era... The new chapter... The new seduction of "Arkane" stigmatised by a professional and sophisticated concept dominated by inspiration and perfectionism, as presented in the debut album "Enraptured Serene Mesmerism". Focusing exclusively on the dark symphonic neo-classical idiom characterised by an intense soundtrack'ish atmosphere that emphasizes on the entrancing, mesmerizing aesthetics of seduction. Arkane's musical and aesthetic concept has elevated now into more sophisticated and specifig forms of art.

HH:  You said you also changed pseudonym; from IkonX to ArkanumX. Why this change, and was this change simultaneously as the changed of the musical project?

AX:  It was all part of the new beginning.. As Arkane... ArkanumX fitted the whole concept perfectly..

HH:  Why did it take so long for a new album? Did you have other commitments or was there a lack of inspiration?

AX:  Extensive emphasis has been given to the inspiration and perfectionism, two basic elements needed to create what I call the "Absolute", although obviously this is Utopic. Hence the delay, it took me three whole years to record the album, step by step, in order the result would be as much satisfactory as possible, and I think I have managed that according to what I had in mind as a general idea when I commenced the Arkane project !

HH:  What are the differences and similarities between Arcane Elitism and Enraptured Serene Mesmerism in aspects of themes and music?

AX:  Arkane musical and aesthetic concept has elevated now into more sophisticated and specific forms of "Art", focusing exclusively on the Dark Symphonic Neo Classical Idiom characterised by an intense Atmospheric Soundtrack-ish feeling which is present throughout Enraptured Serene Mesmerism.

Enraptured Serene Mesmerism is A Dark Soundtrack in eight Parts .

Arcane elitism on the other hand has been a more –Free- album as I was experimenting in various forms of dark Art at that moment.. Both albums have a strong similarity though, and that is creating pictures to the listener .

HH:  I found the lyrics on Enraptured Serene Mesmerism, though beautiful, very difficult to understand. Are there actually words, or do the vocals function more as an instrument only?

AX:  There are some actual lyrics in the Album sung by Stephen Svanholm of Sibelian. The Female vocals are more like used as an instrument indeed, accompaning  music as to create this Arcane Dark Soundtrack feeling and atmosphere throughout the whole album..

HH:  How did you come in contact with Stephen Svanholm? Did the similarities between your and his music initiate the collaboration on the tracks?

AX:  I was amazed by his track "The Sin Eater" presented in a Cold Meat Industry sampler some years ago.. So immediately after I searched on the net about him and finally found out his email and kept in contact since then.. He is a very talented and charismatic musician and I think his male recitations in Arkane's debut album Enraptured Serene Mesmerism fit my musical art exactly.. I really hope we calloborate more in the future..

HH:  I read that when The Fossil Dungeon, who released Arcane Elitism, went to become a net label, you were fed up with labels, and decided to release the new album on your newly formed label Seduction Prod. How is the relation between you and The Fossil Dungeon now? You did release the net version of Enraptured Serene Mesmerism on there.

AX:  I demand to have total control of my music, therefore I took the risk of producing and presenting my art in my own musical production label Seduction Prod.  I have just released the digital version of Enraptured Serene Mesmerism on Fossil Dungeon in order to get a little bit more promotion of my music worldwide. I think it is a good movement as the Arkane debut album can be available to various digital retailers such as iTunes, eMusic, Amazon, Rhapsody, Napster, Yahoo Music and AOL Music, which obviously takes the music of Arkane to a wider audience..

HH:  What are your plans for Seduction Prod? Will you be releasing other artists and projects as well, or will it function solely as a label for your own musical achievements?

AX:  It will solely function as a label for my own musical achievements.

HH:  Why did you choose to release your newest album as a DVD size digipack?

AX:
I wanted to present my music into a beautiful artistic format and I reckon that I have made a great job in this indeed.. Everyone has been really satisfied by it. I think I will use the same DVD size digipack for the next releases of Arkane as well..

HH:
On the frontcover of Enraptured Serene Mesmerism we see a woman dancing and seeming in a state of trance. Who is this woman, and what is the function of the photo in comparison to the audial aspects of the album?

AX:  The front cover Of Enraptured Serene Mesmerism as well as the whole artwork and format comes in unison with the Music, thus it is indeed highly atmospheric and mesmerizing! The cover shows a beautiful maiden under the influence of mesmerism (in ecstatic trance) Indeed again.. The entire aesthetic and artistic concept of Arkane has been based on the art of mesmerism and extensive emphasis has been given to the female archetype of the seductresses which utterly fascinate and allure me to interpret it into music!

HH:  What does the future hold for Arkane and yourself? Are you working on new material?

AX:
Arkane plans to only focus on the distribution of Enraptured Serene Mesmerism for the moment. In a years time from now I shall enter the studios once again to record the somophore Album, which will probably be the sequel of Enraptured Serene Mesmerism both in musical and artistic concept but of fcource taken into more excessive paths of evolution!

Enraptured Serene Mesmerism is available for €10 (Europe) or US$15 (USA) by Writing Arkane or visiting the Arkane Website.
